Sadly the live stream function didn’t work despite all my best attempts today so I’ll get that sorted out for next time, I hope, as I keep learning about this Substack platform.
I still wanted to record something for you: this week from Ruth Reichl’s book “Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise” — which I couldn’t put down last week when I started reading it.
In the video, I read a delicious passage from her book, as well as a portion of T.S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets” — because the title, “Garlic and Sapphires” comes from Eliot’s poem:
“Garlic and sapphires in the mud
Clot the bedded axle-tree.”
And I have an announcement!
For a few years, I’ve been working on a Writing Course that focuses on our Senses, especially on the oft-neglected Scent and Taste. I’m thrilled to share that I’ll launch this course online in April 2025 and in-person after that throughout 2025.
Even if you’re not working on a full-length writing project, this course aims to blend my Sensory expertise from coffee and chocolate with my work as a Writer and (former) Writing professor.
From January to March 2025, I’ll offer free Happy Hour readings and segments from my Sensory Writing course that I hope, will entice you to join the course and awaken all your senses.
